How to Come Up with Fresh Story Ideas

How to Come Up with Fresh Story Ideas When Your Well has Been Tapped Dry

When I face the desolate impossibility of writing 500 pages, a sick sense of failure falls on me, and I know I can never do it. Then gradually, I write one page and then another. One day’s works is all I can permit myself to contemplate.

John Steinbeck

I know that it seems easier to make that extra pot of coffee, read that good book, that you have had in storage for the last ten years, and suddenly decide to make the kids that Halloween costume by hand, than it can be to make yourself sit down and write. Believe me, I have been there.

Here are some brainstorming techniques to get your brain pumping again and churning out ideas.

1) If you are having trouble coming up with characters or even a story line, try developing an action scene. One good scene to kick off your book can get the rest flowing. Develop the characters and story line around that scene.

2) Come up with a problem to solve. Is your main character the class clown or the brainiest kid in school. What type of problem would your character face in his or her normal life? Write your story around the problem and a unique way of solving it.

3)For character development use common sense. Use what is in front of you.

Look at your family and friends and see if they remind you of anything. My first Shakespearean teacher reminded me of a caveman or a husky walrus because of his whiskers. Does your Uncle Arthur have whiskers, wear glasses, and walk with a little bit of a waddle? Turn him into a know it all beaver or a store clerk, at a bookstore that sells books that you can actually climb into and live out an adventure.

Does your sister have a talent for jumping rope and blowing bubbles, with purple bubble gum? Maybe the heroine for your next book could do the same.Is their a kid in your neighborhood that is always getting into trouble? Hmm, do you think that the creator of Dennis the Mennis might have known one?

You can use your family and friend’s talents and their physical characteristics to come up with tons of characters. One hint though- if you choose to make Uncle Charlie a slug or Aunt Emma a rhinoceros, keep it to yourself. They may not be thrilled with their induction into literary history.

Inspiration is all around you, waiting for you to reach out and grab for your next storyline or character. Use stories from the news, jokes that your neighbors tell you, the quirky things that your dog Buster does in the morning.

One final word - stop criticizing what you have written down. In these first stages, no one cares if you have misspelled words or if your grammar isn’t perfect. Just write. The rest will follow, after your story is done.

Keeping Your Dog Healthy

Feed him a balanced diet.

Additional tips from owners include:

Give an occasional yogurt treat
- Ask your vet about giving Boxers calcium tablets as they could have some problems later on in life!

- Keep him comfortable so his immune system can remain strong.

- Boxers are shorthaired and sensitive to extreme elements of the weather and thus must be kept a housedog. His shortened muzzle also makes hot and humid weather uncomfortable for him.

- Give Boxers lots of exercise and regularly.

- Remember that he is a big and strong breed and requires physical outlets for his boundless energy and high play/prey drive.

- Walk them three times a day or have play sessions. Provide plenty of space for them to bounce around. You want to keep their spirit up and not break it or they won’t be the dogs you fall in love with in the first place. Healthy and happy Boxers are a joy to live with.

- Make a breeder your friend.

- Keep in touch with the breeder who sold you the Boxer. The breeder can advise you about care and health matters that are unique to the breed. Any Boxer breeder, for that matter, can be an invaluable ally to you throughout your Boxer’s life.

- Guard your Boxer from fleas.

- Your Boxer has fleas if you find black specks in the fur or fleabite marks on the skin. A tip given by an owner is to give your Boxer garlic daily to prevent fleas.

- Boxers catch fleas from other animals. It is an every day problem that, at some time or another, you can expect to encounter in your Boxer.

- The fleas only go to the Boxer to feed on its blood.

- Fleas mostly live and multiply in your home. The comfortable living - central heating, double-glazing and, best of all, the fitted carpet - we create for ourselves and our Boxers also work best for the fleas.

- De-worm your puppy every month and your adult Boxer, every six months.

Worms is another everyday problem in Boxers but the puppy is more likely to get sick from worms than the grown up Boxer.

The sick one would lose weight and become weak, suffer from upset stomach, poor growth, listlessness or even lung trouble.

They may impede your puppy’s growth and cause him to have a potbelly or be thin and have a shoddy-looking coat.
Your grown Boxer may not be showing any sign of worms but he could spread them more than the sick puppy, through large amount of larvae or eggs passed out in the feces.

If your Boxer has tapeworms, he has fleas too because part of the tapeworm life cycle occurs in flea as the host. As such, treatments against flea and tapeworm are normally prescribed together.

Some, like the roundworm, that infect dogs can also get passed on to children.

In more serious cases, your dog will catch cough, pneumonia and develop lung problems.

There are different types of worms that infect dogs such as tapeworm, roundworm, ringworm and heartworm. De-worm your Boxer puppy every month and your grown Boxer, every 6 months.
Puppies get sick from worms, more so than dogs.

But your infected grown Boxers help spread the worms more through their droppings that would contain large number of larvae and/or eggs.

Released into the surrounding, these larvae and eggs could infect other animals and even children.

The tapeworms have a flat, segmented body.
You see them as single segments or chains that resemble segments of rice in the droppings of infected canine.
Part of the tapeworm’s life cycle occurs in the flea as the host.

Therefore, if your Boxer has tapeworms, it has fleas too and the treatments for both are usually prescribed together by the vet.
The roundworms (toxocara) live and produce hundreds of eggs in the intestine.

They cause digestive upset in puppies, poor growth, and thin or out-of-conditioned coat.
The infected puppies may become listless, have a potbelly or tucked in appearance.

Once the roundworms migrated from the gut to the lungs, your Boxer can suffer lung damage, cough and pneumonia.

The roundworm eggs in the dog droppings get passed out and about.
These are very hardy eggs, resistant to heat and cold, and can survive up to 7 years in the soil. The eggs can pass on to children through ingestion and cause them to fall sick as well.
As precautions, you can toilet train your Boxer puppy to use a place where you can easily clean up and dispose of the droppings into the sewer. Have your children wash their hands every time after they handle the puppies and discourage your puppies from licking people hands or faces.

How To Get A Rebate for Going Solar In California

California is the leading produce of solar electricity in the United States. One of the reasons for this is a rebate program second to none.

How To Get A Rebate for Going Solar In California

The solar rebate system in California comes under a program known as the Emerging Renewables Program. Through this program, utility companies in California provide rebate programs for solar, fuel cell and wind power systems used on residences. In this article, we focus on the solar rebate plans.

Under California law, all utility companies in the state must provide rebates to homeowners that purchase, install and use solar panel systems. Put another way, you get the rebate regardless of whether San Diego Gas and Electric, Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Southern California Edison or Bear Valley Electric Service is your provider.

On January 1, 2006, new rebate designations took effect. For solar panel systems, the rebate is $2.80 per watt until June 2006. The system is limited to a 30 kilo-watt capacity or less. For solar thermal electric systems, the rebate is a whopping $3.20 per watt.

To get your solar rebate, you have to choose whether to get the rebate upfront or over a three-year period on your electric bill. The upfront rebate sounds good, but the program only has ten million dollars budgeted, so you better hop on it now.

Between state, federal and local governments, financial incentives in the form of tax credits, rebates, property tax discounts, net metering and so on have exploded. In some situations, it was actually possible to make a profit on the purchase of a system, particularly if you paid massive property taxes and got a major discount for going solar. The State of California has figured this out and now puts caps on financial incentives. You can take advantage of the incentives to pay for as much, if not all, of your solar system. You are no longer allowed, however, to use the incentives to pay for the system and get cash back!

To take advantage of the solar rebates, there are a few basic requirements. You must be on grid with one of the utilities mentioned above. You can’t produce more than 200 percent of the power typically used by your residence, i.e., you are not allowed to build solar power plants in your back yard. The solar panel system must have at least a five year warranty, must be new and must meet basic national solar panel standards for quality and energy production. On top of this, it is important to remember that your system must be installed with a performance meter, which will be audited from time to time.

The rebate program in California is very strong. With the 3.2 billion dollar solar program just approved, it is going to get even stronger.

How the Christian Right is Blowing It.

I am not a particularly pious person and I certainly don’t go for the religious ceremony of things like Inaugurations and Graduations. It has always been my belief that we should do our alms in a closet. Whatever you give, keep that info to yourself, is pretty much my policy. In the past few years Christians have taken a lot of heat from liberals and moderates as a result of the Bush administration and mostly because of John Ashcroft and what has been labeled as “The Christian Right”.

That being said and believe me the citations are overwhelming and need not to be mentioned here for the sake of space, I have come wonder if the old saying, “What you do speaks louder than what you say”, should be in play here.

The newest attack on the Christian Right is something about how they have accused SpongeBob Squarepants and his buddy Patrick of being homosexual partners and are pushing the gay agenda down the throats of children. Remember Teletubbies sounds pretty similar.

Here is an example of the liberal critics taken from a letter I received in my email, “I see that once again, the “religious right wing” has found a monster in animated clothing, to wit, “SpongeBob.” This has happened before. I remember the comical furor over “Teletubbies” and aspersions that one of them was “gay.”
Now the target for this same claim is “SpongeBob Squarepants.” I don’t know their supposed grounds for their claims, but to say that I find this ludicrous is an understatement. This has become an obsession with this part of the populace, and obsessions are a fixation on something that one deeply wants but cannot have.
I would suggest to the “religious right” that they look within themselves for their monsters and grapple with their own secret desires, rather than attacking animated figures that do nothing more than amuse children.”

Now let’s put this into perspective. Most of my readers have the opinion that homosexual behavior is wrong because God’s Word says it is wrong. No debate on that one at least not from me. If you are one who sees nothing wrong with homosexual behavior, than you would say that my statement is homophobic or in the current debate of SpongeBob you would call me Christian Right Wing so I pose the question “Should the Christian Right Wing shut up and teach the Bible?”

Most of the so called Christian leaders who make the kind of public statements like the ones that have brought all this SpongeBob wrath down on Christians are simply trying to relate what the Bible says in real life examples of today’s culture.

What comes out is a suspicious and paranoid version of a Christian leader looking to condemn at any opportunity. Is there a homosexual under every rock, around every corner should we be preoccupied with unearthing every homosexual agenda or should we stick to preaching the word and be instant in season and out with the Word of God.

The best way to have our Christian light shine is to not hid it under a bushel basket and speak out with love. Sure teach what the Bible says about homosexuality but don’t point to an evil agenda in every aspect of life. I would agree with the critic, “This has become an obsession with this part of the populace (Christian Right), and obsessions are a fixation” given the current tenor to uncover the homosexual agenda.

Like any other type of non-biblical behavior homosexuality is to be rebuked and rebuffed by the Word. There is no pulpit for the obsessed nor is there a platform for the fixated, we must all teach the Word as we are inspired by God to meet the needs of our Christian brothers and sisters.

When someone asks me if homosexuality is wrong I simply quote: Rom. 1:27
And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.

If they hear the Word they will be blessed, if not they will not understand, it is that simple. I Cor. 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.

So maybe the so called Christian Right should back off SpongeBob and teach the Word of God instead. Anyway nothing wrong with a Crabby Patty once in a while I think they are low in cholesterol.

Know Your Gemstone and Jewelry Terms

Beads: Swarovski Crystal may be the finest crystal beads, due to
their clarity, color and variety. Swarovski is an Austrian
company that makes high-quality rhinestones, beautiful cut
crystals, costume jewelry, and other glass-related items.

Czech Glass Beads have the same vibrancy and shine as the
Swarovski crystal, yet are a more cost effective alternative.

Metals: Bali Beads are handcrafted in Bali, Indonesia and are
exceptional in quality and detail. Because these items are
individually crafted from silver by many bead artisans, there
may be slight variations in bead size, form, hole size, and
oxidation. Because of its popularity, more countries are now
producing this type of beads. Therefore, the term “Bali beads”
is now generally referring to “Bali-style beads”. Bali Silver
usually has less than 92.5% silver content therefore cannot be
identified as sterling. Handmade Bali beads are far more
superior in quality, giving more value to your jewelry.

Hill Tribe Silver of Thailand (Thai Silver) are beads and
pendants that have been made by the ethnic minorities that live
in the mountain regions of northern Thailand.

Rhodium is a white precious metal. Rhodium is often used to
plate precious and base metals, giving jewelry a hard,
platinum-like sheen.

Sterling silver is becoming one of the most popular metals in
the jewelry industry. Most people that have allergic reactions
to some metals are able to wear sterling silver. Sterling silver
is easy to clean and care for. It will tarnish with time, but a
little rubbing with a polishing cloth, and it will look good as
new.

14kt gold-filled or 1/20 gold is created by heating and
pressure-bonding a layer of 14kt gold to a brass core. The
gold-filled wire is tarnish-resistant and has a much better
value than gold-plated because it has an actual layer, not just
a minuscule film. The layer of 14kt gold will not rub off like
gold-plated metals either.

Gemstones:

Agate comes in many forms and colors. It is a variety of
chalcedony that occurs in rocks like volcanic lava. Agate is
distinguished from chalcedony by the distinct banding that runs
through it. Wearers of agate are guaranteed health, wealth and a
long life. I’d better get myself a strand!

Amethyst IS the most valuable form of quartz. It’s color ranges
from light to dark purple. Amethyst promotes inner peace &
spiritual insight. Wow! Works awful hard and just think, all you
have to do is wear it!

Aquamarine is excellent for meditation. Gives a sense of peace
and serenity.

Aventurine is in the quartz family. It has tiny flecks of mica
throughout it. It’s color ranges from pale to medium green.
Aventurine helps to dissolve unhealthy thoughts, feeling and
related physical problems. It assists in keeping one balanced
and harmonized.

Black Onyx is not onyx at all. It is chalcedony, which is
another variety of quartz, that has been dyed black.

Hematite is a gemstones that are made up of iron oxide and has
an opaque and iridescent surface. It’s known to calm, soothe,
and ease stress. Sounds like a cup of tea, to me!

Bloodstone is a powerful healer and physical cleanser. It
purifies bloodstreams and strengthens kidneys, liver and spleen.

Blue Lace Agate clears voice and communications and gives
insight into complex problems.

Carnelian grounds and gives focus into the present moment. It
also stimulates curiosity and initiative.

Onyx is a semi translucent to opaque quartz that comes in a wide
range of colors–reds, apricot, oranges, and browns. It is said
to protect the wearer from any negativity.

Pearls are becoming more affordable due to the cultured pearls
available from China. It helps the wearer to have
self-acceptance and added femininity.

Rhodolite is from the garnet family. One of the reasons that
Rhodolite made such a big splash is because of it’s brilliant
purple coloring, close to the color of grape juice. Rhodolite is
a very durable gem stone with a 7.5 on the mohs hardness scale.

Rose Quartz is a type of quartz that ranges in color from pink
to deep red.

Smoky Quartz is becoming very popular in jewelry. It’s color is
pale to a rich smoky brown. It is said to benefit those that are
dealing with depression and fatigue.

Turquoise is a stone that comes in a wide range of colors, the
finest being an intense blue, with the poorer color tending to
be yellowish green. All turquoise will turn colors with aging.
It is very important to take good care of your turquoise to
minimize discoloration. Turquoise is considered by some to be a
lucky stone.

The Mohs Scale is a measurement that tells a substance’s
hardness. The higher the mohs number (1-10) the more durable the
gem stone. Diamonds are 10 on the Mohs scale, while Amethyst is
a 7 and Ruby is a 9.

Other: Mother of Pearl is a more affordable way to acquire the
luster of pearl jewelry. It is the lining of the shell that
houses the pearl.

Raku is a unique ceramic firing process. Each piece is sealed
with a glaze that is high in copper. Each piece is fired in a
ceramic kiln until the heat from the piece ignites paper,
causing a reaction with the copper in the glaze. The result is a
wide range of colors on the surface of the piece full of
beautiful colors, luster, and patterns.

Greek Leather is known for its smooth finish and consistent
color.

Misnamed Stones: This is an issue that was discussed on the
Jewelry Making forum. The following “stones” are not necessarily
even stones.

The Fruit Quartz’ - Cherry quartz, blue quartz, strawberry
quartz, pineapple quartz are all synthetic beads that are made
to look like quartz. They are still a beautiful bead and add
beauty to many pieces of jewelry. As long as they are identified
as being synthetic, there is not a problem with these “quartz’”.
There is such a thing as real cherry quartz, but is very rare
and extremely expensive.

Amazonite is sometimes just dyed onyx that is being sold as
amazonite.

Moonstone is sometimes no more than pressed glass.

Goldstone is a manmade product made out of copper crystals in
glass. Goldstone is sometimes sold as a semi-precious gemstone.

Rhodocrosite/Rhodonite are sometimes confused for each other.

Rhodocrosite has white striations and rhodonite is black.

Chalcedony is actually agate. It comes in a variety of colors.
Chrysophrase and carnelian are both types of chalcedony.

Advanced Link Checks

You should be able to find several indispensable facts about SEO
in the following paragraphs. If there’s at least one fact you
didn’t know before, imagine the difference it might make.

View the source of each and every page: is there JavaScript and
CSS on the page? Remember that spiders may not index pages that
have more than 10k or so of JavaScript or CSS embedded in them.
Spiders don’t enjoy getting tangled up in JavaScript. So as a
general rule you should avoid putting out prompts and alerts
using JavaScript every time that a page loads. Because of this
rule, it is also wise to avoid link partners who do so on the
pages that they link to you from. If anything looks fishy, it
probably is.

CSS won’t give you many problems. If you are going to use CSS,
it is best to link to it from another source. Create a separate
CSS page and use the tag to work it into the head of your HTML.
This method will keep your file size down considerably, and
since you will probably be using the same CSS on several pages,
decrease your bandwidth usage. Normally a large quantity of CSS
within the document isn’t indicative of any suspicious behavior
on the part of the linker. If you feel that you are, indeed,
suffering from the fact that the site uses such an excessive
proportion of CSS on the page itself, suggest to the webmaster
that he/she may want to create an external CSS document and link
to it in his/her header.

Check that you’re still on the domain you clicked on a link to,
and you haven’t moved to another site or a subdomain. Some
people will move you to another domain while telling that’s
their site and your link is there, relying on you not checking
the address bar. This trick is all too common and happens to
folks who are new to SEO every single day. This sad fact will
continue until people begin to catch it every time.

If you don’t have accurate details regarding SEO, then you might
make a bad choice on the subject. Don’t let that happen: keep
reading.

If the domain has changed, delete your backlink to the site in
question immediately and then email the webmaster with your
complaint. If the webmaster does not fix the problem you may
even want to request that they remove the link as the site may
wind up discredited as a link farm or some such thing that you
do not want to be associated with for fear of being banned from
many popular search engines with technology used to combat link
farms.

On a related subject, when you check your back links, make sure
that these links appear in legitimate places. If the site is
completely dedicated to linking to other sites and doesn’t seem
to be a directory or something similar you will want to get your
link removed as soon as possible. There is no time when one link
is worth the risk of being permanently banned from any popular
search engine. Aside from the traffic that you will lose from
that one search engine, you may wind up “red flagged” so to
speak. It seems to be common practice among search engines that
if one finds faulty activity the rest seem to find out soon
afterwards.

Overall, if it seems dodgy, leave it alone. It’s better to
sacrifice one link in caution than to destroy your site’s
rankings by accepting one you’re not sure of. There are hundreds
of situations aside from link farms that can and will give you
trouble. It would be impossible to list every scam as there are
people who make their living (or seem to anyway) in creating and
executing these scams. Whenever there is a new form of “SEO”
technology that “can’t fail,” you should watch out because it is
almost guaranteed to blow up in your face. The only truly
powerful and guaranteed method of SEO is to make your site
valuable to your visitors and then let it fall where it may in
the realm of the search engine.

It is difficult, after you have optimized your pages and
submitted them to search engines and directories, to sit back
and wait, but there is not much that can be done aside from
attempting to accumulate links from good, solid places. The work
that you have done is bound to pay off sooner or later as long
as you stay honest. When it comes to the world of SEO, honesty
is, indeed, the best policy.

When word gets around about your command of SEO facts, others
who need to know about SEO will start to actively seek you out.

thousands of dollars. No sooner had the car been driven out of
the lot, did something fail miserably. Now, with the help of

all those little things that we “would have, could have and
should have” learned about before buying that last used car.

Today’s automotive consumers will be interested to know that
there are a myriad of little tell-tale signs throughout a used
car that will tell us how often the car was driven, how well it
has been maintained, if the car had been damaged in a number of
possible ways, and even whether or not it has been in an
accident. It’s as simple as knowing where to look and what to
look for. Are you wondering if the car was repainted to hide
damage? There is a tool that can measure this! Furthermore,
Jerry teaches his clients about why they shouldn’t make
car-buying decisions based solely on vehicle history reports and

Are You Still Following Your New Years Resolution To Lose Weight?

One of the most common New Year’s Resolutions is “to lose
weight, and get in shape”. However within a few weeks an
overwhelming majority of people are right back where they
started eating foods that aren’t healthy and not exercising. So
why do so many people start out with good intentions and fail?

Most people focus on short term goals and instant gratification.
They want to lose weight but aren’t committed to making the
lifestyle changes necessary to lead a healthier life. Let’s be
honest that chocolate covered doughnut with sprinkles certainly
tastes better than a bowl of oatmeal, and who wouldn’t want to
eat something that tastes better. Truth is unless you are
training for an athletic event its ok to have a chocolate
doughnut from time to time. The key is not to have a chocolate
doughnut every morning. Realize that there are some foods that
just aren’t healthy and you should only be eating them on a
limited basis and in moderation.

The second part of getting in shape and losing weight is
exercise. Again people start out with the best intentions I’m
going to run 5 miles every day. However if you haven’t run a
mile in more years than you care to admit, this is a recipe for
failure. Set moderate and obtainable goals for yourself. First
start out with walking one mile. After a few weeks start walking
for two miles, then three. Once you can comfortably walk the 5
miles, start walking four and half miles and run for a half
mile. Keep up adding to the length you run and subtracting from
the length you walk. It may take 6 months or more for you get to
that stage, and that’s ok. It’s not important that you succeed
quickly, just that you succeed.

One of the biggest reasons people give up weight loss
resolutions is temporary defeat. Maybe they went on a vacation
and gained a few pounds, or they had some big projects for work
and haven’t exercised for a week or two, and what’s the point in
starting back up again. When you start down the road to a
healthier lifestyle realize there will be bumps and even a few
dead ends on the way. Realize its ok to make a mistake as long
as you get back on the right path again, and try not to repeat
the same mistakes you did last time.
