Exercising In The Heat: 5 tips to help you keep your cool!

On a hot day we may feel like we’re melting, but did you know
that our internal temperature (or core temperature) only changes
by a few degrees. Our normal body temperature at rest is
maintained between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius. Our core
temperature is extremely important as the processes that occur
in our cells need it to be very constant in order to keep the
body alive. In fact, you will require medical intervention if it
drops below 34.4 degrees, or above 41 degrees.

Sources Of Heat

Apart from the obvious source of heat: the environment, the body
also has another major contributor: metabolic processes.
Anything that increases energy production, the release of
hormones, or basal metabolic rate, also increases heat
production.

Body Temperature Whilst Exercising

Body temperature reflects the balance between heat production
and heat loss. As we exercise we increase our body temperature
and for us to be able to continue we must be able to release the
excess heat.

This is done using the circulatory system. The heat is carried
by the blood, to the skin. It is then released into the external
environment.

The release of heat is completed by any of 4 mechanisms:

* Conduction: the heat is transferred through contact with
another object. This object must have a lower temperature. The
body loses only small amounts of heat due to this process.

* Convection: the heat is transferred by the motion of a gas or
liquid (eg, air across the skin when running, or water across
the skin when swimming). As these air or water molecules come
into contact with the body, heat is released to them, they move
on, and are replaced by cooler molecules.

* Radiation: the heat is transferred from one object to another
without contact. This can result in heat loss or heat gain,
depending on the environmental conditions

* Evaporation: heat is transferred through the evaporation of
bodily fluids when brought into contact with the external
environment (eg, sweat evaporating off the skin, and to a lesser
extent our breathe as we exhale). This is usually the most
important form of heat loss during exercise. In this process the
heat is transferred from the body, to water on the surface of
the skin (sweat). When the sweat reaches a certain temperature
it is converted to a gas and the heat is released into the
environment.

What does all this mean to the average exerciser?

The human body’s automatic temperature controls work very well,
but you’ll perform much better if you follow these guidelines:

* Expose as much of the skin as possible to the open air. This
will not only allow the sweat on your skin to evaporate, but it
will also allow some heat loss via convection.

* If you are not able to expose much skin (eg, sports uniform),
then take frequent water breaks.

* Wear cotton clothing whenever possible.

* In extremely hot weather, take frequent rest periods.

* If you do not regularly exercise in hot conditions, take time
to acclimatize before participating in high intensity exercise.

Are You Still Following Your New Years Resolution To Lose Weight?

One of the most common New Year’s Resolutions is “to lose
weight, and get in shape”. However within a few weeks an
overwhelming majority of people are right back where they
started eating foods that aren’t healthy and not exercising. So
why do so many people start out with good intentions and fail?

Most people focus on short term goals and instant gratification.
They want to lose weight but aren’t committed to making the
lifestyle changes necessary to lead a healthier life. Let’s be
honest that chocolate covered doughnut with sprinkles certainly
tastes better than a bowl of oatmeal, and who wouldn’t want to
eat something that tastes better. Truth is unless you are
training for an athletic event its ok to have a chocolate
doughnut from time to time. The key is not to have a chocolate
doughnut every morning. Realize that there are some foods that
just aren’t healthy and you should only be eating them on a
limited basis and in moderation.

The second part of getting in shape and losing weight is
exercise. Again people start out with the best intentions I’m
going to run 5 miles every day. However if you haven’t run a
mile in more years than you care to admit, this is a recipe for
failure. Set moderate and obtainable goals for yourself. First
start out with walking one mile. After a few weeks start walking
for two miles, then three. Once you can comfortably walk the 5
miles, start walking four and half miles and run for a half
mile. Keep up adding to the length you run and subtracting from
the length you walk. It may take 6 months or more for you get to
that stage, and that’s ok. It’s not important that you succeed
quickly, just that you succeed.

One of the biggest reasons people give up weight loss
resolutions is temporary defeat. Maybe they went on a vacation
and gained a few pounds, or they had some big projects for work
and haven’t exercised for a week or two, and what’s the point in
starting back up again. When you start down the road to a
healthier lifestyle realize there will be bumps and even a few
dead ends on the way. Realize its ok to make a mistake as long
as you get back on the right path again, and try not to repeat
the same mistakes you did last time.

Elite Personal Trainer Blasts New Over the Counter Weight Loss Pill

Copyright 2006 strength-training-woman.com

Consumers may soon be able to purchase a brand new over the
counter weight loss pill. Federal health advisors have already
given their go ahead, but it still needs FDA approval before it
goes on sale nationwide. GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare is
in position to offer this fat blocking pill to the public. They
are shooting for a release date by the end of this year.

Consumers want to know if this is ground breaking news or if
this is another attempt to rob them of their hard earned cash.
The difference between this new diet pill, called orlistat and
currently being sold with a doctor’s prescription as Xenical,
and several others from the past are that orlistat is garnering
nationwide media and public interest.

“Everyone is getting excited about taking a magic pill,” states
Lynn VanDyke, elite personal fitness professional and fitness
nutritionist. “It all sounds brilliantly simple until we read
about its side effects and cost.”

In 6 month clinical trials, obese people taking orlistat lost
5.3 - 6.2 pounds more than those given a placebo.
Representatives from GlaxoSmithKline also announced that at
$12-$25 per week for the pill over 5 million people in America
would buy the drug if it sold over the counter.

VanDyke explains, “The corporations are planning on making over
$1 billion per year in sales if orlistat is sold over the
counter. As consumers we must educate ourselves and hold
ourselves personally responsible. This drug has shown unpleasant
side effects in half of the trial participants. That’s just
outrageous.”

GlaxoSmithKline lists orlistat’s possible side effects as loose
and oily stools, gas, incontinence and oily spotting. Even the
FDA panel members are concerned with how this diet pill will
interact with diabetics, bulimics, organ transplant patients and
those taking other prescription pills. Watchdog groups such as
Public Citizen urged the panel to reject the company’s
application, calling it a “desperate attempt to revive this
barely effective drug by an OTC switch.”

“All in all, the magic pill leaves you bloated and oily. It
stops working once you stop taking it. That adds up to between
$288 and $600 per 6 months. That is how long the GlaxoSmithKline
recommends taking this pill before stopping for a break. I would
much rather learn a few simple tools on how to eat well and live
a healthy life than take this so-called miracle pill,” says
VanDyke.

Consumers who are in dire straits to lose fat but are concerned
with the side effects and cost of orlistat are being referred to
the Melt the Fat Interactive Guide (more info at
http://melt-the-fat.com). It provides detailed step-by-step
processes that develop a healthy lifestyle filled with fitness,
eating to live and life goal setting.

Top 10 Reasons for Buying a Home Treadmill

Why are treadmills becoming so popular? Why does everyone
have one and not go to the gym as much? What is so great
about a home treadmill? Below you will have all of these
and many more questions answered as you are given ten
reasons for having a home treadmill.

* First, they save time. People say they don’t have enough
time to spend at work or with their family, so how could
they have time to go to the gym. Treadmills save time
because the gym is now brought to you.

* Second, there are no more monthly or yearly gym fees.
You have to renew your gym membership at least once a year
and a typical treadmill will serve you up to 10 years or
more.

* Third, there is the convenience factor. In the time it
would take you to get ready and drive down to the gym, you
could have already got 20-30 minutes exercising on the
treadmill in your home.

* Fourth, it works for whole family. As with most gym
equipment that requires age to use some of the heavier
stuff, a treadmill only requires that you can walk to use
it because it can set speeds for you and your family.

* Fifth, people have been shown to stick to an exercise
regimen that involves a treadmill because you can do other
stuff while you are exercising. This means that there is
not the typical boredom factor that is present in most
workout routines.

* Sixth, there is no weathering out days where the weather
outside and dictate what you are doing on the treadmill.
As they can be put outside and insider, there is never an
excuse on why you did not get to exercise today.

* Seventh it provides and easy setup for anyone and allows
for anyone to be able to use it because it denies the usual
complexity that most equipment of this magnitude possesses.

* Eighth, it is much easier to multitask and do other
things, such as reading a book or watching a video, while
using a treadmill than it is while doing other exercises.

* Ninth, if you are runner, walker, or jogger it is easier
on your joints than running on asphalt or grass as the
surface pads on a treadmill are much more forgiving than
the ground or pavement are.

* Tenth, it is close to a ten year investment to your
health as most treadmills last at least ten years.

For the price of treadmills and the benefits of owning one,
they are the perfect compliment for anyone looking to build
a home gym.
